LBNA TODAY in CT

From: IrishTinker (irishtinker@earthlink.net) | Date: 2002-10-14 13:23:41 UTC-04:00
Well I said enough is enough. I need to get out of this house and get my 100th box. I went out and got "Pumped Up" in Coventry! I got to share the fun with Pine Tree, Pine Cone, and Pine Needle who happened to be in the woods hunting the boxes in that area and were on their way to Pumped Up too! So I got to exchange as well.
The woods of Coventry were full of boxers today as I also got to exchange with Wildcat, Lover-of-Hearts, Lover-of-Butterflies, Piglet,
Little Mouse, & Sports Maniac.

I am new at this and want to know how you manage this exchange business?  If you are trying to be secretive in searching for boxes,  how do you connect with other boxers?  Is there a secret sign or something to let one another know who you are?  Just wondering...

I size the people up and watch what they are wearing (backpack) and look for letterboxing signs (ink on the fingers or hands, reading a paper that may be clues, reading a campus, etc) and then casually ask something like "Are you searching for boxes?" or "Are you boxers?" If they are great! If not it just means one more person in this world thinks I am odd.

I'm with you -- I think everyone I meet is a letterboxer, especially
if they have a backpack or a compass -- duh, they are hiking in the
woods. Do you think it's paranoia?

One of my very first boxes was placed in a location that was visible
from a beachy area where we frequently shore our boat in the summer
to swim and just sit and watch the other boats, etc. After I placed
the box there, I was positive that every person who came walking
along the path was in pursuit of my box!

It wasn't as much fun in Mass today as it was in Coventry!  I fell and twisted my ankle (I'm surprised it has taken me this long!) and only found 2 boxes till I had to go get the 'boys'.  Not a successful day for me.  But the 'pull' to Coventry gets stronger every time a new box is planted....

That's funny. We were hiking in Pleasant Valley/Riverton and some people
were sitting on a rock with plastic bags rustling around. Of course I
thought immediately that they had found the box we were looking for. I
asked if they were letterboxing. They said, "What's that?" I beat a
hasty retreat after they told me it was their bring in/bring out lunch.

I think the last 5 or 6 exchanges were with people we noticed walking
through the woods with CLUE SHEETS in their hands! The other
give-a-way is the suspicious behavior and secretive expressions on
their faces....

On the opposite side of this subject I would be interested in knowing some of the stories of people trying to act casual while in pursuit of a box when others hiking approach.
For example one day French Fox, Odilio, & I were hunting a box in Mansfield in the middle of the woods. We were in the process of looking into a stump at the base of a large tree which we were sure held the treasure.  Picture it, one of us is reaching in to the stump all the way up to his shoulder. A couple with a large dog walk by and slow down to see what we are doing. We looked at each other and the first thing comes to mind is "That is one big tree!" To which French Fox replied "Sure is!" and Odilio asks
"What do you think it is?" We all just smiled at each other because it was just really just your average pine. That couple must have thought we were insane.
Another day Odilio (sorry for telling your tale Odilio) was out on her own and a person working at the museum she was on the grounds of approached her and asked what she was doing. So she explained she was drawing. The women asked what she meant and she exclaimed "I am an artist!" and then she realized that she didn't have a pencil or any paper in her hands or her bag. The women looked at her funny and wandered away!
Do any of you have tales of trying to discrete when someone sneaks up on you?

I am an amatuer photographer, so I typically carry my camera, bag, et
al, with me. On more than one occasion, this has been a great cover
both when hunting and planting boxes! As soon as somebody gets
overly interested in what I am doing, I just start taking pictures
and they move on.

--- My husband and I were looking for The Blair Witch Box and a young
couple came up to us. They just stood there not saying anything, just
looking. My first thought, they were l'boxers. I was so nervous that
I just turned to my husband and kissed him. They left quickly. We had
a good laugh.

I was sitting on a log merrily stamping away when two women on horses walked up.  I of course had ziplock bags and tupperware spread all over the place.  One of the woman smiled down at me and said "Oh, that's a really nice place for a little picnic, isn't it?"

Worked for me!

RTRW and I were in the midst of stamping in too close to the trail I admit when a dog walker came along.  She said "Oh look, there it goes" and pointed to the sky.  I looked and so did they!  We never did see anything, but it took the focus off the box!

Re: [LbNA] LBNA TODAY in CT

From: acahilly@prodigy.net (acahilly@prodigy.net) | Date: 2002-10-16 11:50:07 UTC
First off, we have trouble being subtle, because there are 7 of us,
and often the hound dog, too. Of course there's always a kid or two
milling around, throwing rocks in streams, etc. instead of focusing
on the task at hand, and the dog wants to greet folks and put the
attention on herself, so maybe this acts as cover, or at least
distraction, in itself.
As to meeting others on the trail, we never have. But one day at
Ringing Rocks in PA, we had found the box, and moved on to the
streambed where Wayne was looking for a geocache. Over by the falls
there was a couple with hiking boots, camera, backpacks, walking
sticks, and those outdoorsy-looking hats. They were right up against
the face of the rock, staring at something, burrowing in packs,
staring again, burrowing again. Very suspicious behavior. Of course
they looked just like letterboxers to me, but Wayne insisted that,
due to the hats!, they must be field biologists, as he works with
this sort of person all the time and knows them when he sees them. As
they continues on their way past us, they smiled broadly, greeted us,
and stopped to pet the dog (of course). Then, as I tried to sink into
the rocks in embarrasment, Wayne up and asks, "Pardon my asking, but
are you field biologists?" "No," says they, "We just wear funny
hats." Turns out they'd found a huge caterpillar on the rocks, wanted
to photograph it with their brand-spanking-new digital camera, and
were burrowing in the bag to find the manual.
So be careful. Those folks on the trail might just be wearing funny
hats. Then again, they might really be field biologists.
